“I’ve learned the lesson that when you’re in the middle of something that seems overwhelming, or you’re in a bad situation and it seems like it’s the end of the world or whatever, then you learn that it’s not.”-Lee Ann Womack

“I Hope You Dance” Music Video

The crossover country song, “I Hope You Dance”, was recorded by Lee Ann Womack in 2000.“I Hope You Dance” won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song and also the Country Music Award for Song Of The Year. The song portrays a parent giving advice to their child about how to make the most out of life. “I Hope You Dance” can be described as a song about gratitude, enjoying the small things in life, overcoming adversity, and finding joy in life. The song is very inspirational to many people and the simple hook line, I Hope You Dance, made it memorable. Womack herself has said, you can’t hear those lyrics and not think about children and hope for the future and things you want for them. And those are the things I want for (my daughters) in life.” This is probably how most parents, especially mothers, feel about this song. I know for a fact that that’s what my mother feels when she hears the song.

There was a period during middle school and the beginning of high school where my mom thought that I wasn’t getting out enough and experiencing the “fun” things in life. She always reminded me that I wasn’t taking full advantage of all the opportunities life provides, but I never really cared or gave it much thought. One day I noticed my mom listening to the song “I Hope You Dance” but I didn’t care to stop and take a moment to listen to the lyrics until she started playing it over and over again on the computer. I finally asked her why she kept playing the song and this is what she said: “Because someday when you are given the option to sit out or dance, I hope you dance.” I realized then that the song was about taking chances and not being afraid of trying new things. On that day I decided that I was going to open up to new ideas and people, so I could live my life to the fullest. My mom and I decided that “I Hope You Dance” was going to be “our” song and I plan to have that song played at my wedding someday. This song has created many good memories for me, including bonding with my mom, which then in return has developed the story of my life.
